Hold Your Governors Accountable, Not Tinubu

One thing I’ve noticed about Nigerians is that whenever any problem comes up, whether it’s a major issue or a minor one, the first person many people point fingers at is the President.
Yes, the President has responsibilities and should be held accountable when necessary. But not every problem in Nigeria starts and ends with the President.
The truth is that this habit has allowed many of the people who should be answering tough questions to escape responsibility. When citizens automatically blame the President for everything, some governors and other leaders can comfortably sit back knowing that public outrage will be directed elsewhere.
Take insecurity in some states for example. When communities are being attacked or criminal activities are increasing in a state, why is the governor of that state not receiving the same level of criticism? Why are people not demanding more from the leaders closest to the problem?
Every state has security agencies operating within it. Every state has a government headed by a governor who was elected to serve and protect the interests of the people. So why does the conversation always end at the Presidency?
Another thing that makes me laugh is when people say Nigeria should go back to regional government because that would solve our problems.
How exactly?
If some leaders cannot properly manage a single state today, what makes us believe they would suddenly perform better if they were given an entire region to govern? The problem is not necessarily the structure; the problem is leadership and accountability.
At some point, Nigerians need to stop treating every issue as if it can only be solved from Abuja. Governors were elected for a reason. Local government officials were elected for a reason. They all have responsibilities and should be judged based on how well they perform them.
This is not about defending Tinubu or attacking governors. It is simply about directing accountability where it belongs.
If there is a federal issue, hold the President accountable.
If there is a state issue, hold the governor accountable.
If there is a local issue, hold local leaders accountable.
Nigeria will be better off when we start demanding answers from the people directly responsible for the problems we face, instead of turning every discussion into a conversation about the President.
Let’s stay guided and hold the necessary people accountable.
